The following "Useful Idioms" are reproduced from Arturo Alfandari's original 1966 publication "Rapid Method of Neo".
The choice of idioms may strike the reader as rather idiosyncratic. The original book included some 30 pages of idioms including She is gone to kingdom come and Will you have a slice of melon?. It must be remembered that the book was published quite a long time ago.

There is nothing so difficult as translating idioms from one language into another.

When an English idiom does not appear clear enough in a word for word translation, try and give this idiom its real meaning in quite simple language.

Here are some attempts to translate the true meaning of some English idioms:

So great a man.
A certain Mr. Smith.
To set an example.
What a surprise you are giving me!
I am coming in a few minutes.
Three shillings a head.
To go a-hunting.
To abandon oneself to...
Taken aback, appalled, aghast.
He paid for it dearly.
What's the matter?
In broken accents.
